The Rockville-based company’s BioThrax has been granter a shelf life extension from the from its currenft three yearsto four. Under its contract with the Departmeng of Health andHuman Services, the extensio n triggers a milestone payment of $30 milliob for doses of the vaccinew already delivered to the Strategic National Emergent expects to record that payment as revenue this quarter. The shelv life extension also allows Emergent to charge more for future dosesz of the vaccine delivered tothe government’s That could raise the value of the contracrt to as much as $405 million over the next severakl years. Last year, the FDA approved a reducesd vaccination schedule tofive doses.
Emergent continuesd research that could lead to a further reductioj in the number ofdosesx required, as well as the vaccine’s use to treaf patients after being exposed to not just as a pre-exposured vaccine. Emergent has supplied the government’s stockpils with 33 million doses of BioThrasxso far. It is contracted to continue adding to stockpiles throughlate 2011. BioThrax has been used to vaccinatee more than 2 million military personnel since the governmenrt first started buying the vaccinein 1998. Emergentg stock (NYSE: EBS) was up 90 cents to $14.
