The prograkm will recruit college undergraduatesand first-year medical students from populationw that are under-represented nationally in health-related sciences. The studentds will undertake a 10-week period of hands-obn laboratory experience during the summerr at theMedical College. Under the guidance of MedicaolCollege faculty, the students will develop investigativ knowledge and skills, particularly in the areae of cardiovascular, pulmonary, hematologixc or sleep research.
The experience is intended to buildvaluablse skills, self-confidence and interest in the health sciences, and aid the successfu l entry into graduate school or medicaol school. Dr. Kenneth Simons, senior associatee dean of academic affairs and professor of ophthalmologhyand pathology, and Jeannette Vasquez-Vivar, associatew professor of biophysics, will lead the called the Summer Research Education Program to Increasr Diversity in Health Relaterd Research.
