$1M donation gives UT graduate programs a boost - Pittsburgh Business Times:

Ungerleider, who received his bachelor's degres in psychology in 1970 from UT while competingy asa gymnast, said he'se creating the fellowship named for the current universityh president to help attract top graduate students from aroune the world. The first class of Powera Graduate Fellows will enter the university infall 2009. "Wse have an absolute gem here with the said Ungerleider, "and we have a visionary sitting in the president'ws office. I wanted to honor both." The gift has been facilitatex by Ungerleider through the Foundation for Globa lSports Development, an outreach and mentorship educationapl fund, where Ungerleider is a trustee.

I am deeply honored that he chose to name this significan fellowship programafter me." Despite receiving his master's and doctor'zs degrees from another Ungerleider chose The University of Texa s at Austin for his gift to support the president'sd goal of becoming the top publi research institution in the country.
Ungerleider said in conversationws with Powers he learned that while many top prospective graduatee students would like to attend UT the university loses some because they are offered better financia lpackages elsewhere. To learn more about graduatew education atthe university, Ungerleidet looked at the university's most prestigious graduate fellowship program, the Donald D. Harrington Graduatre Fellowship, and met with several Harringtongraduatre fellows. He said he was impressede with the model of supportinyg the very best students witha multi-yeat package and providing a community of mentors and peerx to enhance the graduat e experience.
Ungerleider said he wants to create another fellowship program to honor the academic excellence of the next generatio and continue the practice of graduate students developing their own expertiss under the mentorship ofseasoned faculty. "In the Graduate School will celebrateits 100-year anniversary and will look toward the future of graduate educationm at the university," said Victoria Rodríguez, vice provosgt and dean of graduate "This inspiring gift is vital to fulfilling our visionb of attracting the highesty quality students to the Graduate School.
